Many car owners avoid taking more auto insurance than the minimum level required by the state simply because of the exorbitant car insurance rates that they have to pay. Car insurance rates are made up of a base rate, after which an addition or reduction takes place, determined by a variety of reasons including those that are beyond the owners? control.

Generally, an auto insurance company looks at the following aspects to decide on a suitable car insurance rate for each car owner:

Age: According to the US Department of Transportation, the probability of young drivers being involved in car accidents is four times higher than that of the elderly. Insurance companies take the view that young driver are more likely to speed, drink and drive, and not wear their seat belts. Families who have young drivers usually pay higher car insurance rates due to this additional risk. Marital status: Insurance companies perceive marriage as a reliable sign of maturity and responsibility, causing car insurance rates to be lower.

Gender: This is another uncontrollable factor affecting car insurance rates. Although bordering on sex discrimination, state laws allow insurance companies to raise car insurance rates for men drivers. Based on car accident statistics, young men below the age of 30 are involved in a great number of accidents compared to women in the same age group.

Location / Neighborhood: The area in which owners live plays an important role. Places with higher probability of car thefts incur higher car insurance rates. Likewise for certain states which have high density traffic, such as New Jersey and New York.

The Car: The more expensive the car is, the more its owner will have to fork out in both collision and comprehensive insurance costs. Collision coverage pays for repair costs, and cars with expensive spare parts increase cost. In addition, more expensive cars are more likely to be stolen.

Amount of Driving: Driving more miles than the annual average increases the car?s exposure to damaging elements and risks of accidents or theft. As exposure increases, so does risk, leading to higher car insurance rates.

Driving and Claims History: Car insurance rates increase with the number of accidents and serious traffic violations a car owner has been involved in before. Besides this, an owner who regularly makes claims to insurance companies tends to have greater car insurance rates.

Credit History: Credit scores measure the types of credits taken, outstanding debt and reliability of past payments, among other things. If owners display stable credit scores over a long term and are able to keep their outstanding credit balances low, car insurance rates can be reduced as well.

It is important for car owners to shop around for the best car insurance rates with all the above factors in mind. Although owners cannot help the uncontrollable demographic factors like age and gender, they can still reduce car insurance rates by working on the controllable aspects like the type of car driven and credit history.

Most people understand that they need auto insurance. In fact, it?s the law, if you drive a car, it has to be insured and the penalty for driving without insurance is pretty severe. However, insurance policy wordings are not easy for everyone to understand. And what you don?t know about auto insurance can hurt you. Here?s some clarification of a few things that are commonly misunderstood about auto insurance.

?Personal property in your vehicle is not covered on an auto insurance policy. Auto insurance policies provide coverage for automobiles. For instance, items like compact discs, laptop computers and cell phones are not covered on an auto insurance policy. Items like these can be covered on a property insurance policy. What this means is that if the contents of your car, like the items listed above, are damaged in an accident or lost by fire or theft while in your car, you?ll need to file a claim for your contents on your property insurance policy.

?If you loan your car, you?ve also loaned your insurance. If your friend is involved in an accident while driving a car borrowed from you, there?s good news and bad news. The good news is, your insurance company will most likely cover the accident (except in extenuating circumstances like if the driver isn?t licensed, or was impaired at the time of the accident, then coverage can be denied or limited). The bad news is, your insurance company treats the accident as if you were driving your car. This means that the accident your friend had while driving your car, is on your insurance record. It?s as if you were driving the car yourself. Best advice, don?t loan your car out.

?When you change insurance companies, you MUST officially cancel your old policy. With most insurance companies, you can request the cancellation of your policy at any time by notifying them in writing stating the date you wish your policy to be cancelled. So many people misunderstand this and presume that if they decide not to renew a policy, all they have to do is ignore the bill. DON?T DO THIS! Unfortunately, the insurance companies most times will send you another bill and then when the premium isn?t paid, they will register a cancellation due to non-payment of premiums on your insurance record. Having a non-payment cancellation on your insurance record is serious stuff and getting this straightened out after the fact can be a real hassle. What you?ll want to do when you change insurance companies, is request cancellation of your old policy in writing. Make sure you watch the dates (the date you?re canceling one policy and starting another policy) so that you have continuous coverage while making the change between insurance companies. You don?t want to be without auto insurance for a day or so while you make arrangements for new insurance.

The best advice on any of these things if you?re not sure is to contact your broker and ask for their advice. Doing this will ensure that you have the coverage you need when you need it the most and it could save you a head ache or two down the road.

Several national rating institutions rate insurance companies. Do coverages, rates, and service vary from company to company? Why can you pay less with one company than another can for the same coverages? Choosing the best insurance company for you is a crucial financial decision. Does your insurance company have the financial strength to safeguard you and your family? If the company cannot pay future claims or benefits, other issues become far less relevant. Financial strength ratings are an analysis of a wide variety of risks that could affect an insurance company’s long-term viability. Insurance companies have failed or ceased to operate due to inadequate financial strength, competitive forces, or changing dynamics in the marketplace.

Standard & Poor’s Ratings (http://www.standardandpoors.com) Financial strength ratings of insurance companies, plus detailed financial Insurer Profiles on nearly 4,000 companies.

Fitch Ratings (http://www.fitchratings.com) Financial strength ratings of insurance companies.

Have you heard of the company where you are considering purchasing coverage? Do you have any experience with the company?

Ask your peers what experiences they have had. What is your sense of the reputation of the company? How quickly and easily are claims processed? Is there 24-hour claims service? Is the claims management in the house of the insurance company or have they outsourced? Auto insurance is meant to make you whole in the case of an accident with injury or property damage. It is to protect your assets and protect you from liability. You will want the peace of mind of a superior rated company when it comes time to manage and pay the claim. The financial health of a car insurance company is an often-overlooked area when shopping for the best auto insurance rate. It is human nature to make your comparison solely on the rates for the coverages. While this is certainly important, you should be aware of the company’s overall rating and level of satisfaction. Consulting insurance company ratings is crucial. Each company issues quarterly reports that are publicly accessible. You cannot always tell the future from the past. However, the past performance is a valuable insight into what expectation to have for your future coverage. One of the factors that are used in order to determine the companies’ ratings is how long they have been in business. If there is no history, you may be taking an unnecessary chance. Look for a company that has a history and make sure that history shows good performance.

What about the reputation of the insurance company? It is very simple to find this information. Just ask around. There are your peers, the BBB, and family. Many times these resources closest to you will be able to share experiences that are favorable or unfavorable regarding the company you are considering. In addition, each state has a Department of Insurance that keeps public information about companies. Use all the resources you can to determine which company is best for you. Once you have paid for the policy, you will then become keenly interested in customer service. Be aware of what the source of information is regarding the insurance company. Many companies put our information about themselves in the form of illustrations that are intended to make them look as good as possible. Of course, while these illustrations must be factual, you should be aware that you are not receiving objective information.

How can you quickly check the company rating? You are on the internet now. Surely, there is a quick way.

Go to http://www.carinsurance.com. Not only will you get the rates of various insurance companies, you will see the A.M. Best rating for each company along side their rates for you personal situation.

Who can you talk to about auto insurance? Insurance agents are a good source. However, due to their life lessons, their love, and their own financial responsibility, parents are an invaluable source to talk to about auto insurance.

Auto insurance is risk transference. This means you are transferring the risk of financial loss from an accident to a company for the cost of a premium. You should purchase the amount of insurance you can afford.

If you purchase too much insurance, you run the risk of not being able to make your monthly payments and your policy’s subsequent cancellation. And, as a result, you will have no insurance at all. If you do not purchase enough insurance, you run the risk of financial ruin when an accident occurs, when you could have afforded the extra coverage.

Insurance agents are a good source to help determine your insurance needs. They can explain the various types of insurance coverage to you. They can often offer you the types of coverage you are looking for to meet your financial needs. They can also find companies that are flexible when it comes to making changes to your policy when your insurance needs changing.

Insurance agents can give you other pertinent information about insurance companies. Part of their job is to answer questions you might have concerning insurance and the different types of coverage that are available to purchase for your vehicle. They are licensed by the state in which you live and they drive on the same streets you drive on so you should not be afraid to ask them questions.

However, parents are an invaluable source when it comes to getting advice on your car insurance needs. I realize that your parents were most likely raised in a previous generation and the gap from their generation to yours could lead to a viewpoint on life-matters which differ from your standpoint.

A difference in opinion between you and your parents is probably true on many matters. And as a result, this might have led to a decline in communication with them. However, their life experiences and closeness to you make them the perfect candidates to talk you about auto insurance. Their experiences over the years have given them an invaluable amount of wisdom. Also, since they love you, you know that their advice will also come from their hearts (besides their heads).

Besides their wisdom and love, parents may also have a financial interest in you. If you are a dependant or a minor, the state in which you live may hold your parents accountable if you are involved in an accident. As a result, they may require you purchase enough insurance to protect their financial assets as well as your own. And if they want you to purchase more insurance than you can afford, to protect their financial interests, they may help you with your premiums.

When it comes to discussing auto insurance, agents are a good source. However, due to their life experiences, their love, and their own financial responsibility, your parents are an invaluable source. Take a couple of minutes and ask your parents their thoughts on insurance. That couple of minutes might save you a couple of dollars, or a lot more, in the long run.

In 47 of the 50 United States, it is illegal to take a car onto the road without auto insurance. Compulsory insurance laws protect the public from the expenses of injuries and property damage resulting from a car accident. The states that require auto insurance set minimum amounts of coverage that guarantee that medical costs and property damage caused by the insured in case an accident is judged to be the fault of the insured. Another name for compulsory insurance is liability insurance.

If you carry compulsory insurance and are judged to be at fault in an auto accident, your car insurance company will pay the medical bills and lost work time and other damages for the other driver and passengers in both his car and yours that are not immediate blood relatives. The minimum compulsory insurance varies from state to state, but your insurance agent will be able to tell you what minimum amount you must carry in order to drive you car on the public roads.

Besides personal injury insurance, you are also required in most states to carry property damage policies to repair or replace any damage caused by your car. Again, the amount varies from one state to another.

There are good reasons for carrying more than the minimum amount of compulsory insurance. If the damages exceed your coverage, for instance, you’ll be liable for anything that your insurance company doesn’t pay. More importantly, there are many gaps in compulsory insurance company.

1. You aren’t covered for theft or a fire that’s not related to an auto accident.

2. You won’t recover the entire amount of the cost to repair damage to your car caused by an uninsured vehicle.

3. If you were judged to be at fault in the auto accident, there is no coverage for your injuries or damages.

4. Even if you’re not at fault, there’s no coverage for other expenses related to your auto accident like towing.

Most insurance agents recommend that you carry a greater amount of insurance and coverage other than what’s strictly required by your state. Often referred to as ‘comprehensive’ coverage, it will include:

Personal Injury Protection, which will pay medical expenses and reasonable work and living expenses for lost job time due to an accident, no matter who was at fault.

Travel, towing and glass replacement that results from causes other than an auto accident.

Usually, if you take out a loan to purchase your car, the bank will require that you purchase and maintain comprehensive insurance on your vehicle until your loan is paid off.

Female auto insurance is almost similar to other normal auto insurances except for few distinguishing features. It is necessary for all vehicle drivers to have sufficient insurance coverage irrespective of differences in gender, etc. Besides, women also need to be fully aware of special provisions and discounts on female auto insurance.

What is special about this auto insurance?

Insurance companies offer separate female auto insurance for women drivers. Premiums on such insurance are lower and it is most often easier to get. Insurance companies argue that although the number of accidents by men and women drivers could be the same, the intensity of accidents is by far less severe with women drivers. This is because women are safer drivers and less rash while at the wheel. Hence, insurance coverage in cases of accidents involving women drivers does not amount to huge amounts.

Where can I get my auto insurance?

It is simple and easy to shop for female auto insurance. You can talk to different insurance agents, financial professionals, and brokers before taking any final decision about your insurance. The best place to shop for this insurance is to look through different web sites of insurance companies. You can study all different offers of insurance companies and clear all your doubts through available different internet tools. You receive many quotes to pick the most suitable one.

While shopping for your female auto insurance do not opt for the cheapest available insurance. It is best to look into all possibilities and opt for the insurance offering best coverage. This will relieve you of many worries at occurrence of any eventuality. You then receive immediate medical care and attention while you can repair or replace your vehicle within very short time.

What is the available coverage?

Coverage under female auto insurance is almost similar to other insurances. Available coverage includes Property Damage Liability, Bodily Injury Liability, Personal Injury Protection, Collision, Comprehensive, Uninsured Motorist, etc. Such coverage helps you meet various expenses like medical, repair, replacement, property damages, etc. in the event of any accident.

Usually, women are less aware of different offers of female auto insurance. You rather stay away from acquiring details regarding discounts and special privileges for women and understanding nitty-gritty of things. Hence, it is necessary for you as driver and the owner of your vehicle to understand and be prepared to meet any eventuality by having sound and sufficient insurance backing.

So what could possibly be more sleep-inducing than reading (or writing) a 650-word article about auto insurance? After considerable brain-racking, I?ve come up with one possibility: watching towels dry. However, if you drive a car in the United States, the law requires that you have your fair share of auto insurance. This article, in particular addresses one facet of auto insurance coverage: glass coverage.

So what?s your point?

The purpose of this information page is not to navigate the morass of options, riders, or auto insurance companies. If you don?t know whether you want ?good hands? or a talking lizard, you should dig deeper on the websites these companies spend lots of money on to entice your patronage. Or you could investigate getting yourself a reputable insurance agent to act on your behalf. Insurance agents are people who think insurance is fun, and therefore can be trusted to accurately answer insurance questions. One resource for locating a reputable agent is the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America website: http://www.iiaa.org.

Again, what?s your point?

The point of this article is to address just one aspect of auto insurance coverage, namely the aforementioned glass coverage. Should you have it? Should you skip it? In most cases, a glass coverage rider can be added to your policy relatively inexpensively – depending upon your situation, it could be less than $10 per month. Considering the cost of glass replacement (a windshield alone could cost over $200 to replace), it could be a wise investment. For a quick quote using the particulars of your vehicle, go to http://www.safelite.com and click the ?get an instant quote? link.

But before making insurance decisions, you must assess your situation first. How much driving do you do? Under what conditions? On what type of roads?

Let?s address these questions individually.
1. How much driving do you do?
If you normally drive 3.5 miles on Sunday to attend church, and park your vehicle in an environmentally controlled garage the rest of the week, you may not need glass coverage. However, if you drive every day, and if your driving is for extended periods, your chances of a damaged windshield due to road debris, flying junk throw up from passing motorists, or the occasional misguided pigeon, are statistically higher. Calculate your weekly, monthly, and yearly mileage to help you get an idea of how much time you actually spend on the road. You might be surprised at the results you find.
2. Under what conditions do you drive?
Do you drive in adverse weather conditions? Windy or stormy conditions increase the odds of rubble being blown into your auto, and sub-freezing weather makes your windows more susceptible to damage by making them more brittle.
3. What type of roads do you drive on?
If you drive on unpaved roads, your chances of catching a stone thrown up by another vehicle rise. Also, if you travel on highways or expressways, you increase your chances of damage from long-haul trucks or construction vehicles that frequently drop bits and pieces of stuff as they pass. In addition, your higher rate of speed means anything hitting your windshield is colliding with it at a higher rate of speed.

So I guess you?re saying my auto insurance coverage should include glass coverage.

I am not an auto insurance agent. I don?t work for any auto insurance company. I don?t even play an insurance agent on TV. The information presented here is to help you come to your own decision – to provide you with the auto insurance opinions of this author, and some food for thought. I will say, however, that I do carry glass coverage, and it has enabled me to replace several windshields in the past three years. And that, my friend, beats the heck out of driving around wearing goggles and a scarf like a WWI flying ace.

Do not wait until you are in a quandary at the rental counter. Before your next business trip, find out if you are covered through your own automobile insurance policy or through your credit card company.

Business Use

Since the expense is for business use, take the coverage the rental agency offers for at least two reasons: 1) If you have an accident, your insurance carrier will not be aware of it and thus it will not affect your personal auto policy rates. 2) It is a deductible business expense whereas your personal auto policy is not.

Auto Insurance

Call your agent to find out what your auto insurance policy covers when you rent a car. To be properly covered in your rental, your existing policy must include liability, comprehensive and collision coverage for rental vehicles. Liability insurance covers you if you injure another person in an accident, and comprehensive and collision insurance cover the rental car if you are responsible for the damage.

Credit Cards

After you know what your auto policy covers, check with your credit card company. Some credit card companies offer collision and theft insurance when you use their card to pay for a rental, but this coverage is usually secondary to your personal auto policy. Significant restrictions may apply: For example, the card company may require that you decline the rental agency?s collision damage waiver ? a provision of your rental agreement that limits your liability for damages to the car. Remember, a credit card will only cover damage to the car, not liability claims against you. That means your credit card will not protect you if you injure others or destroy property. In addition, this coverage might exclude business use or be limited to a certain period of time and geographic area.

Rental Insurance

If you do not have adequate coverage through your auto insurance policy or credit card, you should purchase coverage. The most misunderstood part of rental insurance is the collision damage waiver. A collision damage waiver isn?t really insurance; instead, it is a guarantee that the rental company will pay for certain damages. Rental agencies offer collision damage waivers or loss damage waivers for about $14 to $20 per day. If you decline the collision damage waiver, you accept responsibility for all damages.

The collision damage waiver also covers loss of use ? the money a rental agency loses when the vehicle cannot be rented due to damages. In most states, an automobile insurance policy will not cover this cost and you could find yourself personally responsible for it.

In addition, when you damage a rental car, some agencies will expect you to pay up front for repairs or replacement costs. This means the money comes from your pocket and you must get reimbursed by your auto insurance company. The collision damage waiver protects you from these up-front costs.

In addition to the collision damage waiver, most rental agencies offer:

?Supplementary liability insurance, which acts as secondary coverage to your personal policy

?Primary liability insurance for drivers who don?t have auto insurance policies or don?t want to use them

?Personal accident insurance

?Personal effects protection that insures your belongings

So, ultimately, it depends on your situation, but do carefully consider all of these possibilities and most of all, make sure you are covered!

Car insurance or auto insurance is insurance against losses incurred due to thefts or accidents. If you are a car driver you need car insurance. In most of the states, having car insurance is mandatory by law but even if it is not so it is always best to get car insurance to protect oneself against the high costs of accidents. If you live in a state that requires car insurance, then you need to buy the minimum amount of coverage specified by law.

You can buy a car insurance policy based on the type of coverage you require. There are different types of car insurance coverage but primarily it can be grouped under three broad categories of liability coverage, physical damage coverage and uninsured motorist coverage.

Liability coverage pays for bodily injuries or death, and property damages caused to others by accidents. It is the primary part of most car insurance policies. Bodily injury coverage includes expenses involving medical bills, loss of income, and pain and suffering. Property damage covers you for damages caused to other people?s cars and property in an accident. The liability coverage also covers litigation costs for lawsuits filed against the insurance holder.

The second type of car insurance coverage is the physical damage coverage, which includes collision and comprehensive coverage. Collision coverage covers damages caused to your car by collision with another vehicle or object. Collision coverage is normally determined by the value of your car. The comprehensive coverage is for losses that are not related to car accidents. Damages caused by unforeseen disasters like floods, fire, earthquakes, theft and vandalism are covered by comprehensive coverage.

Uninsured motorist coverage covers for bodily injuries and property damages caused by uninsured motorists. The insured person?s policy will cover medical expenses sustained in accidents where the other driver is at fault but has no insurance.

Besides these three broad types of car insurance coverage, there are other insurance coverage too that are included in a car insurance policy.

Medical coverage pays for medical expenses for injuries caused to the insured driver and the passengers by car accidents, regardless of fault.

Personal injury protection coverage available in some states pays for medical expenses for the insured driver no matter who is at fault.

Rental reimbursement covers the cost of renting a car if your own car is being repaired as a result of accident or other insured damages.

Insurance policies usually combine various types of coverage. Knowing the laws of your state will help you in determining the minimum car insurance coverage you require. You can also opt for additional coverage based on how much money you can afford to lose in case of an accident.

Since there are many factors that go into determining your auto insurance rates, there are many chances to lower your rates.

If you change jobs and your drive to work changes or you stop working or you work from home, you should contact your insurance company.

If you have a teen driver and they go to school over 100 miles away without a car then you should be able to get a discount.

If you get married and are in your teens or twenties call your insurance company and see about combining your policies.

Take defensive driving if your state allows it for a discount.

See if increasing your comprehsive and collision deductibles will save you a lot of money. You need to compare what you’re saving and how much more you will have to pay if you file a claim. For example, if you go from $500 to a $1000 deductible and it lowers your insurance $50 per 6 months then it saves you $100 a year.

It will take you 5 years to break even from what you are saving compared to how much more you have to pay.

Now, if it saves you $250 every six months then it would be more worth your while.

See if combining your auto and home insurance polices will qualify for a multi policy discount with your current company. This could be a substantial discount.

One of the biggest ways you could save $200-$500 or more a year is shopping around for insurance. The auto insurance industry is very competitive and this is great news for smart consumers like yourself. Shop for auto insurance quotes here and see how much you can save.

A.
